A financial advisor cover letter is a letter that often accompanies your resume in job or internship applications. However, cover letters aren’t always required for the purposes of these applications.

So why write one in the first place? Well, your cover letter does what your resume cannot! Your cover letter–when done well–answers the question “Why you?” for a hiring manager or search committee.

More specifically, it answers the question: “Why are you a strong candidate for this position and employer?” It allows you to connect the dots from your experience and skills to a specific position and employer of interest! In your cover letter, you only have one page to articulate this connection. So how do you do this concisely, clearly, and in a way that positively captures your reader’s attention? Let’s consider how you might do this paragraph by paragraph! In the first paragraph, briefly introduce yourself. State the specific position you are applying to and where you found out about the position. If appropriate, mention the name of the person who told you about the opportunity. Additionally, convey why you are interested in the specific company or organization that you are applying to.

This is an opportunity to show the employer your enthusiasm for what they do, what they believe, or who they serve; it’s also an opportunity to show that you did your homework as you incorporate specifics about the employer that you took the time to research. Lastly, you want to include a one-sentence thesis statement that briefly outlines why you are the one for the job!

For example: “A combination of my X interests, Y knowledge, and Z skills make me a strong candidate for the __ position.” This thesis statement is your cover letter’s main point! However, it just tells your audience how you are qualified. You also want to show them how you are. This is where the body paragraphs come in. In the body paragraphs, expand on X, Y, Z.

Through concrete examples highlighting your most relevant experiences and skills, illustrate your qualifications in action. In these paragraphs, avoid simply repeating your resume. Instead, build on select information presented in your resume, name the qualifications demonstrated in the example or examples provided, and connect those back to the position of interest to communicate fit! Sometimes the connection to what the employer seeks is clear; other times it isn’t as obvious and requires explanation.

If the connection isn’t clear, it is your job as the applicant to build the bridge between your background and the position of interest. Finally, in your letter’s concluding paragraph, restate your thesis in different words, indicate your interest in an interview, and thank your audience for their time and consideration. Once you have finished composing your cover letter’s content, make sure to fine-tune the details: Read over your cover letter to ensure it doesn’t come off as a “one-size-fits-all” letter; if it is generic enough to work for any position at any company, it isn’t tailored enough.

Format your letter according to standard business letter format. Proofread, proofread, proofread! If you want an extra pair of eyes to review a draft of your letter before you finally submit it, consider having an advisor at the UC Davis Internship and Career Center look it over! Now you have a guide to get started on a cover letter to complement your resume. Keep in mind that this could be the very letter that helps you land an interview for your next job, internship, or opportunity!
