This year we need to increase your council tax by 3.99 percent for most people this will mean less than 90p extra a week and the boroughs council tax will still remain cheaper than most of London. When the government confirmed funding for local councils last year it was on the assumption that we would increase council tax by at least this amount.
If we don’t increase council tax we simply won’t have the money to provide the important services we all need, however, we know that for people on low incomes paying council tax on top of the cost of living can be a struggle, so we’re investing in ways to support those who need it most.
We’re increasing the support available through our council tax reduction scheme which means that people on low incomes can get up to 85% of their council tax paid for. We have a discretionary hardship fund to support those struggling to pay the remainder and qualifying pensioners and care leavers can still get up to 100% of their council tax paid.
The council funds local organizations that offer a wide range of financial support and advice and in our upcoming budget, we will announce an extra five hundred thousand pounds for projects to directly help our poorest residents, including help for families in food poverty to access fresh healthy food.
We froze council tax for over a decade but the government has cut our core funding by half and is now making this impossible. Your contribution will help us to keep Hackney a place for everyone, protect the most vulnerable, create more opportunities and do the things that make our borough a great place to live.

Well council tax band will determine how much council tax you pay and it ranges from band a being the cheapest and band F being the most expensive.

How to challenge your council tax band
Every UK property sits within a council tax band and this determines how much council tax you’ll get billed the bans are calculated based on a valuation of your property from a specific point in time.
But if you think your property has been valued incorrectly or the property value has changed you can dispute your council tax banned in England and Wales.
You’ll need to contact the valuation office agency or VOA and request your evaluation explaining why you think you’re banding is wrong the VOA will assess the property’s size layout character location any change in use and its value on a certain date to determine its council tax bound.
If the property is new it will be compared to similar types of properties in the area if the VOA finds that your property has been placed in a higher band than it should not only will your council tax be reduced in future.

How Your Property Tax is Calculated
I want to explain to you how your property taxes are calculated based on how much your home is worth. Imagine there is a town that only has three homes. And they’re each worth a different amount. The total cost to provide all of their town’s services is $1000.
This is collected through property taxes. Each homeowner pays property taxes based on how much their home is worth. So, the value of all the homes are added up and divided by the town’s cost. Which gives us the tax rate. This tax rate is applied to all the houses to get enough money to pay for all of the services. So, each homeowner pays according to how much their house is worth.
Every four years, the houses are reassessed. Let’s say all three properties have gone up equally, in value. If we go back to our calculation, the total cost of services hasn’t changed, but the total property value has increased. When this happens there will be a decrease in the tax rate.
Now, when we apply that new rate on all the homes, everyone still pays the same. Let’s recap. One. Property taxes are based on what a home is worth. If reassessments all increase equally, then everyone pays the same taxes as before. Now, let’s say another four years has gone by and these homes are reassessed. During this time, the house on the right became more valuable in the market than the other two.
Okay, so, time for a little more math. The total value of all the homes have increased, which means the town has to calculate a new tax rate. With this new tax rate, the first two homes will actually pay less than the home on the right that was reassessed at a higher value. Since the cost of services hasn’t changed, the town doesn’t need to collect more property taxes.
However, since property taxes are based on a home’s value, those taxes could potentially go up or down, based on the rest of the homes. So, what happens when the cost to provide services goes up? Well, it means more property taxes need to be collected from every home and a new tax rate is calculated. To get the new rate, we take that amount that the town now needs and divide it by all of the property values.
The new rate is applied to all the homes and now everyone has to pay the new tax amount to continue to fund all of the services. So, let’s review.
- One: Property taxes are based on the value of a home. When homes are reassessed equally, each home owner will pay the same amount, proportionately, as before.
- Two: When homes are reassessed at different values, each homeowner will pay a different amount proportionately, based on how much their home increased in value.
- Three: When the town’s cost to provide services increases – a property tax increase – then, everyone pays their share, proportionately, across the board. And that explains the relationship between property value and property taxes.

If you are the only adult who lives in your home, you can get a 25% discount on your Council Tax bill. You will need to tell your council that you are the only adult living in your home and apply for the discount.
